Choosing an Outdoor Rug Manufacturer in India: A Checklist for Importers

4 min read

India is one of the main sourcing countries for woven polypropylene outdoor rugs. Retailers, importers and brands in the US, UK, Europe and Australia buy here for design range, scale and export experience. But not every supplier is a manufacturer, and the differences show up in quality, timing and compliance.

This checklist explains how to choose an outdoor rug manufacturer in India, what to ask, and how a typical order runs from enquiry to shipment.

Why source outdoor rugs from India?

  • A mature PP weaving industry. Indian factories have decades of experience weaving polypropylene rugs and mats for export.

  • Custom designs. Jacquard looms make it practical to produce your own patterns and colourways.

  • Recycled options. Many factories can weave with recycled PP, and some hold GRS certification for recycled content claims.

  • Flexible shipping. Major ports such as Nhava Sheva (JNPT) near Mumbai connect to most destination markets.

Manufacturer or trader: why it matters

A trader buys from factories and resells. A manufacturer controls production. For outdoor rugs, that control matters because colour, straw thickness and weave density all affect how the rug looks and lasts outdoors.

Ask any supplier:

  • Do you extrude and colour your own PP straws?

  • How many looms and plants do you run?

  • Can we visit or video-call the factory floor?

A manufacturer that extrudes, colours and weaves in-house can match colours more consistently and fix issues faster.

The importer’s checklist

1. Product range and sizes

Check that the supplier covers the sizes you sell. Outdoor rug programmes often need everything from 3 × 5 ft doormat-style pieces to 9 × 12 ft patio rugs and 9 × 20 ft RV mats. See our outdoor rugs for patios, camping and RV mats and beach and picnic mats.

2. Weight and quality

GSM (grams per square metre) is a useful quality measure. Woven PP rugs commonly fall between 300 and 600 GSM, depending on size. Ask for the GSM of each size and check it on the sample.

3. Materials

Decide whether you need virgin PP, recycled PP or both. If you plan to market recycled content, ask for the supplier’s GRS certificate and check it is valid.

4. Compliance and ethics

Many retailers require ethical sourcing checks. Ask whether the factory is a Sedex member and what certifications it holds. You can review our certifications.

5. Private label capability

If you sell under your own brand, confirm that the factory can produce your designs and apply your labels, swing tags, barcodes and packaging. Our private label service explains how this works.

6. MOQ, lead time and samples

These three terms decide how easily you can test and scale a range:

  • MOQ: usually set per design. Streamflow’s MOQ is 500 pieces per design.

  • Lead time: Streamflow’s lead time is 30–45 days, depending on the order.

  • Samples: at Streamflow, samples are paid and the cost is credited against your first order.

7. Packing and shipping

Ask how rugs are packed and which Incoterms the supplier offers. A common export method is a poly bag per rug, then HDPE bales. Streamflow ships FOB Nhava Sheva (JNPT) or CIF. See our export and wholesale terms.

8. Track record

Years in business, export awards and trade fair attendance show stability. Meeting a supplier at a fair such as Spoga+Gafa in Cologne or Domotex USA is a good way to see products and the team in person.

How a typical order runs

  1. Enquiry. You send sizes, designs, quantities and target dates.

  2. Quotation. The manufacturer replies with prices, terms and sample options.

  3. Sampling. Samples are made and sent for approval of colour, size, GSM and finishing.

  4. Purchase order. You confirm quantities, labels and packing.

  5. Production. The factory extrudes, colours, weaves and finishes the rugs.

  6. Quality checks and packing. Rugs are checked, bagged and baled.

  7. Shipment. Goods leave on FOB or CIF terms with the export documents.

Red flags to watch for

  • No clear answer about who makes the rugs.

  • No physical samples before bulk production.

  • Vague lead times or terms.

  • Certifications that cannot be shown or checked.

  • Slow or unclear communication during the enquiry.
