Types of Polypropylene Mats, by Where You Actually Use Them
Catalogues like to sort mats by code. Buyers end up with pages of numbers and no clearer idea what to stock. Customers do not think in codes. They think: I need something under the awning, something for the patio table, something I can throw in the car for the beach.
So sort PP mats by place and job. The material is broadly the same — woven polypropylene tape, colour through the tape, pattern built in on the loom. What changes is size, weight, folding and finish. We make from 3x5 to 9x20 ft in 300 to 600 GSM at Jalgaon, and the types below are how those sizes and weights get used in real orders. The material background is on our PP mats page.
Outdoor rugs for patios and gardens
The patio rug is the generalist. It defines a seating area, sits under a table and chairs, and takes daily foot traffic through a season. Mid to larger sizes suit most patios, and weight needs to be enough for the mat to lie sensibly and resist shifting when chairs move.
Check chair legs on your sample. Push a chair back and forward twenty times. Look at the edge where it gets dragged. If your range is patio-led, spend time on our patio mats page and build the brief around table size first. A rug that only fits with every chair leg exactly on it will be returned as "too small" even when the measurements were printed correctly.
Garden use adds mud and hosing down. Woven PP suits that life because water runs off and dirt shakes out rather than soaking into a fibre. Dry it before long storage and say so in the care copy.
RV, caravan and camping mats
These are outdoor living-room floors. Under an awning, the mat becomes the surface people walk on barefoot, set chairs on, and keep out of the dirt with. Sizes run large for a reason, up to 9x20 ft in our range, and the folded pack matters almost as much as the open size.
A camping mat has to fold or roll back into the space a family actually has in a vehicle. Test that with a sample, in the bag you plan to sell, after it has been used and hosed, not only when it is new and factory-folded. Our camping and RV mats page covers this brief, and our earlier wholesale guide to camping and RV mats goes into sizes and MOQs. Do not brief a camping mat like a patio rug with a different photo. The customer uses it differently and judges it differently.
Weight is a balance. Too light and a large awning mat can feel unsettled. Too heavy and nobody wants to carry it to the pitch. Talk through awning size, folded size and expected use before fixing GSM.
Beach and picnic mats
Here, carrying wins. A beach mat gets rolled, folded wet, shaken hard, and left in a hot car. Smaller sizes and lighter weights in our range usually make sense. The design can carry more of the selling work because the customer buys with their eyes first at this size.
Sand is the test. Take a sample to sand if you can, or at least shake grit out of it over a hard floor. Woven PP shakes clean in a way a fabric picnic blanket does not, which is the honest comparison to make. It will also not behave like a soft blanket to sit on. It is a woven mat. Write copy that says what it is, and customers who want that thing will be pleased with it.
Our beach and picnic mats page is the place to start for this range. Carry bags and pack format should be decided at briefing, because they change how the product reads on a shelf.
Indoor and everyday utility use
Not every PP mat lives outside. Woven PP gets used in kitchens, entryways, utility areas and other places where a mat needs to be shaken out and washed down easily. The appeal is practical: water does not soak in as it would into natural fibre, and the mat is light to move for cleaning underneath.
For indoor use, look harder at how the mat sits on a smooth floor and how the edge feels under bare feet. Check the reverse side. Our woven mats show the pattern in reversed colours on the back and can be used either side up, which buyers can present as two looks from one piece. Do not oversell indoor softness. A woven PP mat does not feel like a wool rug, and pretending otherwise creates returns.
Size discipline matters indoors too. Door swing, under-table fit, a centimetre that catches on a threshold. Measure the space first.
Relief and institutional mats
Relief mats are bought in bulk, to a specification, often against a tender or a set requirement. The questions are different: consistency across quantity, size and weight held across the order, packing that works for distribution, and paperwork that matches what was ordered.
We keep a dedicated relief mats page because this brief should not be treated as a leftover category. If you are sourcing for institutional or relief use, bring the exact specification, quantity and delivery requirement into the first conversation. Our normal MOQ is 500 pieces per design and production is 30-45 days, with FOB Nhava Sheva or CIF terms. Confirm any tender-specific requirements before production rather than hoping standard packing will suit.
Choosing between types when a design fits several
A single woven design can sometimes serve a patio range and a camping range at different sizes and weights. That can be efficient, but do not let it blur the brief. Write each product listing for the place it will be used. Photograph it there. State size, GSM, pack and care for that use.
Start with place, then size, then weight, then design. That order sounds obvious until you watch a range get built by picking designs off a wall and forcing sizes onto them later. We have made these mats since 1994, with GRS and Sedex options available, and the orders that run cleanest are the ones where the use was settled first.
Look across the full outdoor rugs page, pick the use your range is really for, and ask for the sample that matches it. Samples are paid and credited against your order. Stand on it in the setting it is meant for. The right type usually becomes obvious once the mat is on the ground instead of on a screen.
Frequently asked questions
What are the main types of polypropylene mat? By use: patio and garden rugs, RV and camping mats, beach and picnic mats, indoor utility mats, and relief or institutional mats. Size, GSM and pack format change with the use.
Are all PP mats made from the same material? The base material is polypropylene woven as tape yarn. Specification differs: our range is 3x5 to 9x20 ft and 300-600 GSM, matched to the intended use.
Can one design be sold for patio and camping? Sometimes, at different sizes or weights. Brief and list each use separately so size, pack and expectations are right for that customer.
Which type should a new range start with? Start with the use your customers already buy for. Send us the use, size and design direction and we will suggest a specification and sample.
